Kathy Johnson

In Her Own Words

Curiosity and experimentation are the guiding forces behind my art practice. I explore the natural processes of eco-printing and rust-printing to create the many papers and textiles I use in my mixed media work and handmade books. The unpredictable nature of these techniques presents both challenges and moments of excitement. While they may dictate my color palette and require a release of creative control, they also invite unexpected results to unfold. Embracing this combination of intention and serendipity leads me on a continual path of discovery and exploration.

ABOUT ECO-PRINTING

Eco-printing is the process of making botanical prints from the natural pigment found in leaves and flowers. The plant material is sandwiched between layers of fabric or paper and heated to release the pigment, without the use of synthetic dyes, inks, or paints.

Examples of plants used: Maple and Japanese maple trees, birch trees, sweet gum tree leaves, smoke bush leaves, rose leaves, coreopsis, cosmos, morning glories, and marigolds.

To care for 100% Silk Noil (Raw Silk) gently hand wash with mild soap in warm water and line dry.
