Michael Fanelli

In His Own Words

My work is concerned with being open to my experience of the world around me, my perceptions, emotions, and trying to preserve some aspect of it in a photograph. Using the medium to extend my understanding of the world around me. And then say, hey look at this!

About Microcurrents: studies of the topography of water in small streams — The primary subject of these photographs is the specular glints of bright sunlight reflecting off the surface of water in a small Connecticut stream. The process involves wading into the water with the camera fixed on a tripod. The distance to the subject ranges from a few inches to several feet. Rather than freezing the motion of the scene, less than one second exposures are made that record the light moving on the surface of the water. The resulting traces of light allow us to visualize the energy and topography of the water in remarkable detail, often creating unexpected and poetic abstractions.

About Michael

Michael Fanelli is a photographer and graphic designer based in Clinton, CT and Westerly, RI. His work in photography began with film, particularly using medium and large format cameras both in the field and the studio. Although he now uses digital equipment, the process remains largely the same: to render an image intentionally, using the language of traditional photography, even when pursuing experimental imagery. Celebrating what can be seen with a camera that at times may not be viewable to the eye under normal circumstances.

Michael is a member of the arts group Gallery One CT. He exhibits his work in galleries throughout New England and was selected to show work in the Nor’easter exhibition at the New Britain Museum of American Art.

Michael is also co-owner of AIR Studio Gallery with Annie Wildey,
